The Importance of Treasury’s!

From Summer to Autumn

Treasury: “From Summer to Autumn”

A few weeks ago I posted a Blog about promoting on Social Media sites, commenting,  “Two years ago Etsy announced that Treasury’s were no longer a good way to Promote your items, indicating that with so many outside sources (Social Media sites) that the only way to promote your Shop and items was through Social Media”.

I certainly didn’t mean to imply that Treasury’s were no longer a great way to Promote your items on Etsy, I was merely quoting Etsy’s thoughts about the important of also promoting outside of Etsy on the various Social Media sites.

For those who may have missed my recent Blog, this is the link:  https://pjkbaker.wordpress.com/2016/07/24/promoting-through-social-media/

I must clarify that I, as well as many of my Etsy friends, although we do a lot of Social Media promoting, we completely disagree with Etsy’s assessment of the “death of the Treasury”!  I still feel that creating a Treasury is the perfect way to promote many of the Shops here on Etsy – as well as a lot of fun creating the Treasury while going through many Shops to find the perfect item to enhance my Treasury’s theme!  Where else can we create the “Beauty of Summer”, “Autumn’s Color’s” and so many “Christmas Shopping” ideas!

Unfortunately, I have discovered that many don’t create Treasury’s because they are not exactly sure what a Treasury is; or how to create one.  I have had people sending me a convo stating, “I would love to do a Treasury, but don’t know how to start”. Well, hopefully by the time you finish reading this Article, you will not only be adept in creating your own Treasury; but will also be excited at the prospect of learning the “Art of Creating a Treasury”. I promise that once you realize how very easy it is, you will be hooked!

First of all, “What is a Treasury”? A Treasury is a “tool” on Etsy where you choose 16 items from various Shops of your choice. These could be items from your favorites list; favorite shops, or just searching Etsy if you choose to create a Treasury with a specific topic, color, or theme. As I said, creating a Treasury can be one of the most important “tools” on Etsy. While you are creating the Treasury with your 16 items; the key is that you are also “promoting your own Shop”! As people view the Treasury you just posted, you are also bringing your Shop to the attention of other Etsy members who may have not previously noticed your Shop. By posting a specific item in your Treasury, each time that someone views a specific item, you are not only increasing views to their Shop, but also, most of those “featured”, in turn, often those featured, when creating their own Treasury, will feature an item from your Shop, again, increasing views to a specific item, and your Shop.

Throughout the Article, I have featured a few of the Items featured in my “From Summer to Autumn Treasury”.  After posting the Treasury, and notifying the Shop Owner, it is time to start posting your favorites onto your various Social Media sites – I have posted the various Social Media sites where I posted these items.

So with this background information. It is now time to “Start Creating Your Own Treasury”. Choose a “Theme”, as I mentioned earlier, Summer, Autumn, Christmas, a specific color, or maybe just a Song that inspires you, are all great suggestions to start. From there, choose a “Title” that is not only creative, one that will catch the attention of others; but as I have previously mentioned using “Key Words”, this holds true in the importance of how your Treasury is listed.  Once you have decided on the “Theme” of your Treasury, and your creative “Title”; the next step is to choose those 16 items that will compliment your “Theme” and/or “Title”. I am sure many of you already have in mind specific Shops you have seen while browsing through Etsy, and favorite a specific item that caught your eye.

View the various Shops within your own Team; you will be surprised at what you will find as you visit these Shops. Besides the usual Shops we see every day in the threads, look at the Members list and find a Shop that has not been noticed before, you might be surprised at what exists within these various Shops. If you see an item that is perfect to compliment your Treasury, for myself, I find it easiest to mark it as a favorite (they can then be found in the little heart at the top of your Shop page), this makes it easier to find when posting the items in your Treasury List.

You are now ready to begin to “Create Your Treasury”! To start – click on the little “Treasure Box” which can be found in the upper right Sidebar of your Shop. Once you click on that link, a page will pop up with 16 empty square boxes. Your name and Shop will show up as the “Curator”; another way for someone to notice your Shop. As the “curator”, you can indicate the “Theme” you have chosen, or indicate if it is a Team Treasury (ex: a BBArtisan Treasury).

Now let’s get started: First enter your Title, then go to the Treasury boxes. Even though Etsy feels that Treasury’s are not that important, they have made making a Treasury a lot easier than some of us “oldies” may remember.  For each item you wish to feature, click on the item; next to that item on the right side next to where you would “heart” an item, click on the Link that says Treasury, the item will immediately show up in your Treasury. Continue until all the boxes are filled with your favorite items to compliment your Treasury. Next, on the right side, you will side you will see a link “tags”; Tags are descriptive keywords that help Shoppers and other Team Members discover your list when looking for a specific item while searching within the many listings of Treasury’s.

You are now ready to “Share your List”! Once you have created your beautiful collection, you are now ready to share your Treasury with your friends. Also don’t forget to let those that are featured in your Treasury by sending them a convo with a link to the Treasury. You can also share your Treasury on some of various Social Media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google and Pinterest that you may be connected with.  If you find you need to “edit” your Treasury once it has been posted. Click on the link shown on the lower right side, under “Curator tools”. Once you have edited your Treasury, make sure you click on Save!

I know this may sound a bit confusing at first, but once you post that first Treasury, you will definitely be hooked, and ready to make that next Treasury. ***If you have any questions, please feel free to convo me, I will be more than happy to guide you through creating your Treasury.***

**Also, remember “Treasury Etiquette”!  If one of your item’s is featured in a Treasury, please take a second to leave a comment on the Treasury, and “heart” each item featured.

  1. I love creating treasuries, when I have the time. I enjoy promoting work and makers that I feel deserve an extra spotlight.

I still love creating treasuries, but mine get a lot less views than they used to when the original Etsy front page still featured them! Love the bright, happy colors of your treasury!

Remember those days when there were only 333 Treasury spots and one would sit (along with 1,000 other Etsians) anxiously waiting for that spot to open – for me it was always about 1am!
